علمِ عروض کے مُوجد، مشہور نحوی امام خلیل بن احمد بصری علمیت کے ساتھ ساتھ خودداری اور بے نیازی میں بھی قابلِ رشک مقام رکھتے تھے۔
سلیمان والیِ فارس نے اپنے بیٹے کی تعلیم و تربیت کے لیے انہیں اپنے پاس آنے کا پیغام بھیجا، حضرت نے پیغام لانے والے ایلچی کی ایک سُوکھی روٹی سے مہمان نوازی کی اور کہا :
میرے پاس اِس کے سوا کچھ موجود نہیں، بادشاہ سے کہنا جب تک خدا تعالیٰ اتنی روزی دے رہا ہے مجھے بادشاہ کے دربار پر حاضر ہونے کی کوئی ضرورت نہیں'۔

کیف بھوپالی نے کہا تھا :
جس دن مری جبیں کسی دہلیز پر جھکے 
اس دن خدا شگاف مرے سر میں ڈال دے۔
اللہ والوں کے توکل اور بے نیازی کے تو کیا کہنے! البتہ خودداری واقعی بڑی چیز ہے، اہلِ علم کو اس سے بہر صورت متصف ہونا چاہیے، جہاں اسے ٹھیس پہنچتی ہو اور یہ احساس کسی جلد بازی، بدگمانی یا اپنی ذاتی غلطی کا نتیجہ نہ ہو بلکہ بلا سبب واقعۃً عالم کی عزت پامال کی جارہی ہو وہاں رہ کر مقامِ علم کی آبرو ریزی کے بجائے اپنے خالق و مالک پر توکل کرکے اپنا رستہ الگ کرلینا چاہیے۔

اقبال نے کہا تھا :

اے طائرِ لاہوتی اس رزق سے موت اچھی
جس رزق سے آتی ہو پرواز میں کوتاہی

Imam Khalil bin Ahmed al-Basri, the founder of the science of prosody (Ilm-e-Arooz) and a renowned grammarian, held an enviable position not only for his profound scholarship but also for his self-respect and detachment from worldly desires.

Sulaiman, the Governor of Fars, sent him a message requesting his presence to educate and train his son. The esteemed Imam hosted the governor's messenger with nothing but a piece of dry bread and said:

"I have nothing other than this. Tell the ruler that as long as Almighty God provides me with this much sustenance, I have absolutely no need to attend the royal court."

Kaif Bhopali once said:

The day my forehead bows at any threshold,

May God split my head asunder that very day.

Words fail to describe the absolute trust (Tawakkul) and detachment of the people of God! However, self-respect is truly a magnificent virtue, and scholars must embody it at all costs. Wherever it is wounded—and this feeling is not the result of haste, misconception, or personal error, but rather a case where a scholar's honor is genuinely and causelessly trampled upon—instead of staying there and allowing the dignity of knowledge to be desecrated, one should trust in their Creator and Master, and part ways.

As Iqbal said:

O celestial bird! Death is far better than that sustenance

Which hinders the grand spirit of your flight. .
