Introduction
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, and all his noble companions.
Among the greatest personalities in Islamic history, Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) holds a remarkable position. He was one of the closest companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, one of the ten companions who were given the glad tidings of Paradise (Asharah Mubasharah), and the second of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. His era of leadership is remembered as one of justice, prosperity, discipline, and remarkable expansion of the Islamic state.
Early Life
Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) was born in Makkah about thirteen years after the Year of the Elephant. He belonged to the respected Banu Adi clan of the Quraysh tribe. His father was Al-Khattab ibn Nufayl, and his mother was Hantamah bint Hashim.
Even before accepting Islam, he was widely known for his courage, intelligence, wisdom, and strong personality.
Acceptance of Islam
In the early days of Islam, Hazrat Umar (RA) strongly opposed the new faith. However, Allah had destined guidance for him.
One day, while intending to confront Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he learned that his sister, Fatimah bint al-Khattab (RA), and her husband, Sa'id ibn Zayd (RA), had embraced Islam. When he visited their home, he heard the recitation of verses from Surah Taha. The powerful words of the Quran deeply touched his heart and completely changed his life.
Soon afterward, he went to Dar al-Arqam and accepted Islam at the blessed hands of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. His acceptance of Islam greatly strengthened the Muslim community, allowing Muslims to worship openly at the Ka'bah.
The Title "Al-Farooq"
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave him the title Al-Farooq, meaning "the one who distinguishes between truth and falsehood." Throughout his life, Hazrat Umar (RA) remained committed to justice, honesty, and the truth.
His Caliphate
After the passing of Hazrat Abu Azs-Siddiq (RA), Hazrat Umar (RA) became the second Caliph in 13 AH. His caliphate lasted nearly ten years and is considered one of the greatest periods in Islamic history.
During his rule, the Islamic state expanded into Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Palestine, and Persia. More importantly, he established a system of justice and public administration that became a model for future generations.
Justice and Care for the People
Hazrat Umar (RA) was famous for personally checking on the welfare of his people. He often walked through the streets of Madinah at night to learn about the conditions of ordinary citizens.
One well-known incident tells of a woman boiling water in an empty pot to comfort her hungry children. When Hazrat Umar (RA) learned of this, he personally carried a sack of flour from the public treasury, cooked the food himself, and fed the family. He said that no one else would bear his responsibility before Allah on the Day of Judgment.
This incident reflects his deep sense of responsibility and compassion.
Major Achievements
- Among his most important achievements were:
- Establishing the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.
- Organizing the Bayt al-Mal (public treasury).
- Setting up an independent judicial system.
- Introducing administrative and policing systems.
- Founding important cities such as Basra and Kufa.
- Providing financial support for the needy.
- Developing roads, mosques, and public infrastructure.
Simplicity and Fear of Allah
Despite ruling a vast empire, Hazrat Umar (RA) lived a simple life. His clothes were often patched, and he never sought luxury or worldly status.
He constantly feared Allah and worried about fulfilling the rights of his people. His leadership was based on humility, accountability, and sincere devotion to Allah.
Martyrdom
In 23 AH, Hazrat Umar (RA) was attacked while leading the Fajr prayer by Abu Lu'lu'ah. After remaining injured for several days, he attained martyrdom. He was buried beside Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Hazrat Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (RA) in Madinah, a great honor granted by Allah.
