He belonged to the respected Banu Asad clan of Quraysh.

Initially, Hazrat Zubair ibn Al-Awwam (RA) was among those who supported seeking justice against the killers of Hazrat Uthman (RA). However, when he met Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA), Hazrat Ali (RA) reminded him of a saying of the Prophet ﷺ.

According to this narration, Hazrat Ali (RA) said:

Do you remember that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to you:

O Zubair! A time will come when you will fight against Ali, while at that time Ali will be upon the truth.

When Hazrat Zubair (RA) heard this, he was deeply affected and said:

By Allah! If I had remembered this hadith earlier, I would never have entered this battlefield.

After this, Hazrat Zubair ibn Al-Awwam (RA) immediately decided to withdraw from the conflict and left the battlefield.

Martyrdom of Hazrat Zubair ibn Al-Awwam (RA)

While returning from the battlefield, Hazrat Zubair ibn Al-Awwam (RA) was attacked and martyred by a person named Amr ibn Jurmuz at the place known as Wadi al-Siba.

When the killer went to Hazrat Ali (RA) and informed him of his action, considering it an achievement, Hazrat Ali (RA) became extremely saddened and said:
